C.O.P.S. (Central Organization of Police Specialists) is a late 80s' animated series created by DiC Entertainment (now known as Cookie Jar Entertainment) that aired between 1988-1989. This show is based on a toyline of action figures, known as C.O.P.S. n' Crooks, that were created by Hasbro the same year the show first aired. The show aired again in 1993 on Saturday mornings in syndication as "CyberCOPS" to avoid confusion with the live action version of COPS, the reality TV show. The series features a team of futuristic police officers lead by Special Agent Baldwin P. Vess (C.O.P.S. Codename: Bulletproof) who strives to bring a powerful criminal leader Brandon "Big Boss" Babel and his army of criminal thugs to justice and restore law and order in the streets of Empire City in the year 2020. The show contains only 65 episodes and has gained many fans who grew up enjoying the series along with its unforgettable characters such as Bulletproof (My all time favorite character), Buttons McBoomBoom, Big Boss, Nightshade, Mace, Berserko, Highway, Sundown, LongArm, Barricade, Dr. BadVibes, and many others.
In my honest opinion, the cartoon has the strongest appeal. The toys and the comic books both should have been made into exact replicas of all the characters as seen in the show and made into the exact format of the cartoon series itself; all made to promote the cartoon itself and include in the series Mainframe, Mirage, Nightshade, Ms. Demeanor, Brian O'Malley, Whitney Morgan, Commissioner Highwaters, and Mayor Davis. It has all of the delightful combinations of light-heartedness, interesting stories, humor, action, excitement, awesome, unique characters, each with personalities that makes all of them special in their own right, a vessel known as The Ultimate Crime Machine, a Big Boss look-a-like, a brilliant Berserko, a big blimp, a violin playing, sharp-shooting lady COP, a retired policeman who always proves that you're never too old to be a crimefighter, a green car, a romantic, loving relationship between a COP and a Crook, a "pardner" in crime, an African-American woman who's also the President of the United States, trained bugs, The Bad News rock band, a clownmobile, a lucky penny, thieving toy robots, instant justice machines, bad cookies, a crimeboss who despises illegal drugs (let alone a dirty suit), a little girl who dresses up like a superhero, a Mountie who always gets his man, unforgettable battle cries of "It's Crime Fighting Time!" and "Crime's-A-Wasting!", a COP, who acts like a sportscaster, a conscience band, baby-size crooks, a chip off of a COP's own block, a boxing kangaroo, speed suits, ghost suits, and so much more! It has a lot more OOMPH in it than the toys and the comic book series all put together
This is the cartoon that had a strong influence in my life ever since I went to high school when it first aired on Fox and on WGN channel 9 in the Chicago station. I love that cartoon very much and I don't want it to ever be forgotten. There are far too many who may have forgotten about the series, but I am determined to keep the memories and the influence of the series alive and bring them right back atcha' and help people everywhere rekindle the memories of C.O.P.S. and hopefully elevate the series to an absolute cult classic filled with die-hard fans, both old and young.
And it looks like this mission, at long last, is accomplished through Mill Creek Entertainment which released the entire series on DVD in two volume sets!! Click the links above to order from Amazon! :)
Bulletproof Vess and His Hero Harp
Whenever Bulletproof has free time on his hands and finds no criminal capers for him and his team to solve, Bulletproof would gleefully exclaim, "It's harp plucking time!" and goes to a very beautiful gold harp he keeps in his office right behind his desk. He sits down on his office chair behind the harp, tilts her back to rest on his right shoulder, and plays music upon her beautifully.
The Harp, whose name is LadyHarp, stands 6 feet tall and is entirely plated in gold with a crown on top, 7 pedals on the bottom base, a beautiful curved neck, an extended soundboard and bottom base both decorated with florals, a C.O.P.S. badge adorns the front top part of the pillar, and 47 special unbreakable strings stretches across the frame of the harp.
Whether one is a police officer on duty, a crook planning a heist (or escaping from the Law), or a civilian walking by, one just could not help but pause for a moment to listen (and be moved to tears) to the heavenly sounds of the harp being played by none other than the founder and commander in chief of the Central Organization of Police Specialists, who, with great skill, plucks, strums, and glisses across the strings of the harp while either singing out what's on his heart, or just let his harp do all the "talking".
When he had enough playing for awhile, he would keep his harp on stand by as he proceeds to leads his team into keeping the streets of Empire City safe from Big Boss and his gang of Crooks until "It's Harp Plucking Time." again.
